Shooting fungi in Tasmania happens in the Autumn. Walks in the wet mossy forests offer tasty morsels to those with sharp eyes. This one was tiny.Time
It can be quite dark at any time in the forest but luckily a good flash makes fungi hunting possible most of the day.Lighting
I use these shots to practise my lighting techniques so usually an off camera flash hand held with a reflector on the other side. Flash higher and reflector lower. I made my reflector by pasting a piece of foil on to cardboard, a few wrinkles is actually better.Equipment
I shot this on my Nikon D610 with a Nikon 105mm macro lens. I use a Manfrotto 190xpro tripod which is really useful for getting low and reaching out. My Flash is a Yongnuo YN568ex and I use Yonguo flash triggers.Inspiration
I'm always on the hunt for unusual colours with mushrooms and having the spider was an unexpected bonus. The combination and saturation assisted by the flash leads to an image which can "tell a story" or lead the viewer's eye around the image. I think for me that's what photography's about.Editing
I always like to saturate my images a little, crop in and focus the light in the middle but other than that this one was done in camera. In my camera bag
When I go out for fungi I have a Nikon body and 105 macro ready but I almost alway leave a bird lens 150-600 in the car for any feathered friends who might want to say hello.Feedback
Walk slowly and check what's around. Where there is one there's usually more. Don't be afraid to get down low and be prepared for the wet and the mud. Take something to kneel on like a gardener's mat. Watch out for leeches and snakes!!
