The flower is one of the bulbs I transported to my current home, a small farm in Holly Springs, atop a mountain overlooking Springvile, Alabama.Time
The time between waking and being functional is a long climb for me. Found a way to say it in my poem “Perchance”: My reptilian crawl toward morning wakefulness. So... Guarantee it was afternoon when I was futzing around the farm taking care of some chores.Lighting
I wanted to capture detail so shot on a clear, sunny day since this was an outdoor photo.Equipment
As ever, my iPhone 8 Plus. I always feel slightly apologetic mentioning that, but with good lighting and a good subject, humble devices can do queenly things.Inspiration
First, everything was in bloom. Can’t argue with nature. I also wanted to explore what I could communicate with images, so I shot a series to do storytelling without words — a picture book for adults.Editing
Of course I did cropping, but I also experimented with different techniques in the series of images, depending on what I wanted each particular shot to “say,” This photo represented She in full bloom, open to the world, at the peak of her joy, welcoming the relationship She and He were carving out. So I didn’t mute the gaiety or interfere with what She was projecting: a clear, close, open, unadulterated access to herself. In my camera bag
I currently shoot with an iPhone, which requires very little extra equipment. It’s always with me, and though it’s constrained in terms of lenses, filters, etc., it’s quickly accessed and I’m learning that some post-processing can compensate for its limitations. I do usually have a hiking stick with me, though it won’t fit into a bag.Feedback
I think it’s helpful to experiment with different angles. And if, like me, you don’t have access to sophisticated camera equipment, use your limitations to propel you into something new.
