Location
This photo was taken in Antarctica around the Palmer Islands. We had taken a water excursion to shore and there was a large colony of Chin Straps.Time
We would usually try and get as many land excursions as possible as long as the weather co-operated with us. Luckily we had many great days to venture out to shore and on this particular day we had overcast yet calm day. Land excursions tended to take place in the afternoons.Lighting
Lighting in Antarctica around the month of March is quite amazing especially at sunset. On this day is was overcast and hence harsh light was muted. When photographing penguins you don't want the white feathers to get blown out so cloudy days are preferable.Equipment
For my trip I had brought my Nikon D750 for landscapes and Nikon D5 for wildlife. For this photo I had my D5 using the Sigma Sport 150-600 lens.Inspiration
Penguins like this Chin Strap have unique personalities and so when I walked around I chose a spot and sat down to observe and photograph close-ups of several birds resting. Many were standing up looking all plump and fat and this little guy was sleepy. He looked very content and with the chin strap, he looked like he had a huge smile on his face.Editing
I usually edit my photos using Adobe Camera Raw and process through Photoshop only. I darkened the edges slightly and added a tough of contrast and then sharpening. In my camera bag
I've got the Nikon D780 now and still have my Nikon D5.I have since gotten rid of the heavy Sigma and got the Nikon 500mm PF to lighten my load. I also have the Nikon 70-200 2.8 and Sigma 24-105mm, sigma 85 mm ART, Sigma 50mm.Feedback
Going to Antarctica was at the TOP of my bucket list and a place where one should try and visit once in their lives if they can. The photographic possibilities are endless. If you love wildlife or love landscapes then Antarctica is a must. Of course photographing penguins is hard unless you are in a large city that has a zoo and they have them there but seeing them in their natural habitats is the best place to see and photograph them.
