Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Medway Towns, a group of towns about an hour away from London based within the county of Kent. I have lived here my entire life so the majority of my work is based here.

Time

The day started at 8am, I spent the day with my partner walking the Medway River. It was taken at the height of the Corona Virus out break, I tried making the most of the time given for our daily exercise, by getting out with my camera to explore some of the places I had been putting off visiting for some time. It ended up being around 11:30am by the time we had reached this spot, I'd burnt through a couple of rolls of Fomapan 200 B&W film by this point. This was one of the last images taken before heading back home and my favourite from the day.

Lighting

The lighting on the day was actually quite harsh sunshine, which caused the contrasting shadows but overly the harsh light isn't to apparent in this image and thats down to the image being in black and white. I shoot primarily with natural lighting and often focus more on the subject then how it is lit, however it is key to a great image to light the scene properly.

Equipment

For this image and many of mine, I used an analogue Bronica GS-1 which gives me a a 6x7 negative with Fomapan 200 film, the lens was a 90mm.

Inspiration

I have an interest in Brutalist architecture, and so great concrete structures definitely draw my attention. Also the lines created from these three bridges put together drew my eye to the scene as well the contrast between the idyllic surroundings of the Kents countryside and these lumps of concrete planted within the landscape.

Editing

I do very little post processing to my work, because I work on film I tend to just do some dust removal to my images after scanning and then maybe just tweak the contrast and warmth of the image if I shoot on colour.

In my camera bag

I try and keep my equipment when I am out shooting to the bare minimal, sometimes for me if i am carrying around to much it ends up taking away from the actual capturing and makes me focus on gear. This particular day I just had my camera, lens and rolls of film. I also sometimes carry a polaroid or Fuijifilm instaxwide for those moments I just can't wait to see.

Feedback

Like much of my work and photography in general, the key is getting out of the house and into your surroundings. I think its important to document the area you come from, I do this as a picture of the time I live in and hope that the work created will live into the future and mature to show generations of the Medway Towns what this area looked like.
