As many species of bird come flooding into the high country of Virginia, the northern Flicker is particularly prevalent in early spring as they take advantage of the limited ground cover to seek out emerging insects from the forest floor. This beautiful example was canvassing a log, covered in moss, in search of insects. Note the almost three-dimensional spots in addition to the stunning colors of this magnificent member of the woodpecker family.
