Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken during an evening walk with my dog through a local Manor grounds. I have seen the view a thousand times and know that during the winter, a rare golden red sunset will produce a great photograph. Ideally, I would have used a tripod and slower shutter to get a mirror glass reflection on the lake. The lake is just one of a group owned by Horam Manor Fisheries at Horam Manor, Horam, East Sussex, UK.

Time

I took the image at around 6pm in October. During winter the lack of foliage on the trees give a transparency to the backdrop of the sunset.

Lighting

Completely natural but a case of waiting until the right type of sunset came along in time to get there and set up.

Equipment

Olympus E-M1ii Sigma 25mm Art 1.4

Inspiration

I am disabled and am not allowed to drive so, I learn to maximise the potential of local perspectives as its hard to get out. This means I try and vary how I capture the same repetitive views.

Editing

I have trained myself to use Lightroom but now tend to use a variety of software apps such as Lightroom, DxO Raw, PhotoMechanic and most of all Skylum Luminar AI. I catalogue and cull using Photomechanic because the program has the most effective and fastest cataloguing and initial editing features so I can sort out the rating, color code and tags before starting the editing proper in Luminar. I am currently training myself the DxO suite of apps as I would like to get as much detail and depth to my raw files prior to editing the image proper.

In my camera bag

I have a couple of bags I use regularly. Until recently I exclusively loved my Peak Design 21 ltr bag but am greatly impressed with my K&F Concept Roll Top Bag. It is massive, light and unobtrusive (doesn't yell out 'Camera gear'). In it I carry my beloved Sony A7 riii, a Tamron 28-200 f2.8. I spent years using Olympus and Panasonic M43 gear and loved the whole kit but it felt like it wasn't getting better and I wanted more detail. I moved to the incredible A7riii and use it with Sigma and Tamron lenses which give me incredible freedom. The 28-200 Tamron is a fabulous all in one lens and its f2.8 means I'm not hampered at all with low light problems. I also carry with me a Sigma 110mm Art Macro lens which is beautiful for macro and portraits. I use a Godox V1 flash gun which is powerful and like carrying a studio lighting system with you.

Feedback

Some photographers travel hundreds of miles to get shots. Because of my imposed limitations, I have to exploit to its fullest my imagination and my surroundings. Both of these don't cost you anything. We can limit ourselves by making our local areas 'mundane'. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but sometimes, you have to look hard to see the right 'crop' for that beauty.
