Location
My husband and I would take our children for a stroll around our neighborhood every afternoon at the outset of the pandemic, in early 2020, when the lockdown had just begun. This is a clover that I found during one of our daily walks in a nearby park.Time
Golden hour. We would often go for walks later in the day (after dinner) during lockdown because we didn't have anyplace to be the next day. My husband was working from home at the time, and schools had been closed but had not yet begun online classes. As the sun started to set behind us, my husband and I sat on the grass as the kids played on the playground. As a photographer, golden hour is my favorite time of day.Lighting
With the sun setting behind me, it only light up my hand and the clover. The grass behind it was dark. I felt it would look great in black and white, giving it a more surreal vibe and focusing more on the subject because the background was rather colorful.Equipment
This was shot on my Canon 80D, with an 18-135mm lens.Inspiration
When I was a kid, I used to go hunting for four-leaf clovers in my grandfather's backyard. Each time, I gave them to him, and he proudly displayed them on the wall of his kitchen. He passed several years ago. When we sat in the grass at the park, there was a patch of clovers nearby, and I remembered those times as a child. I wasn't expecting to find one, but when I did, I knew I had to photograph it and publish it on my grandfather's memorial page as if I were gifting it to him once again.Editing
I did a little bit of cropping, and I lightened the black to more of a grey for a surreal look.In my camera bag
I always carry at least two lenses, my 18-135mm and a 75-300mm. I like to have options while I'm out, but I try to only take two at a time as a camera bag can get quite heavy. I bring my Canon 80D body, but I'll bring a T5 as well if I'm staying overnight or going to an event. I use to bring a large tripod everywhere I go, but I now carry my Joby GorillaPod to save on space to to make my bag a little lighter. It's come in handy many times, especially while traveling.Feedback
I thought the lighting in this shot really made it. Experiment with different lighting and reflectors, or different places and times of day if you're outside. For example, during golden hour, this was lit up by a small ray of sunlight, and the background was shade. It really made the subject stand out.
