Location
These lovely light fixtures are outside the doors to the Molson's Bank, located in my hometown of Calgary, Alberta (along Stephen Avenue). The building was built in the very early 1900's as a bank, and it is now a restaurant. I love to take photo walks down that street, because there are so many beautiful old buildings from the 1900's. It is definitely worth a visit, if you are in the area!Time
It's not often that I am downtown during sunset, so I was excited to see all of the lights come on for the first time in years. As the sun set, I took many photos of these light fixtures at various angles, to get the shot I was looking for. The sunset during a cold, cloudy day added a dramatic cool effect which I just loved.Lighting
There was a bit of light coming from all directions, making this specific spot light up just enough for that mysterious feeling that I was going for. I turned off my shade setting on the camera, to really capture the cool and dark feeling of that moment.Equipment
This was shot with my Canon T5, with a 18-55mm lens. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
I was looking for something I haven't photographed before. Stepping out of my comfort zone, I thought I would visit these historic buildings at sunset without my flash or tripod to really challenge myself. Seeing these places at night for the first time, was like a whole new world to explore with my camera. The photos turned out better than I imagined.Editing
I added a bit of a vignette, to reduce some of the brightness around the edges of the photo to really draw the eye in to the light. In my camera bag
I always have my Canon T5, a 18-55mm lens, a 55-250mm lens, two circular polarizing filters and a shutter release cable. You never know when you will need this or that, so I like to have a bit of a variety of camera accessories to be ready for almost anything. I strongly recommend the polarizing filters, they are so much fun to work with once you get the hang of them.Feedback
Dusk and dawn are great times to capture something like this, or even after sunset. A polarizing filter is very helpful here, to reduce the reflections in the glass of the lanterns, and a tripod would be handy if you are worried about camera shake.
