Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on top of the Rockefeller Center in New York City while I was there a couple of years ago. It was my first visit to NYC so tried to get creative with the images I was capturing.

Time

The picture was taken not long after lunch, we’d finished eating near Times Square and as we had no real plans for the afternoon decided to head back to the Rockefeller Center. I loved the view from when we went up a couple of days before and as it was a nice day thought it would be nice to go up again.

Lighting

As it was it around midday the sun was almost directly above us but the little bit of cloud cover and wall behind me provided a nice bit of shade around the camera, while also allowing enough light to glisten on the binoculars.

Equipment

I shot this on my Sony A7ii using a Samyang 35mm lens, although it’s a relatively cheap lens on a decent camera I love the compact nature of it while also packing a punch.

Inspiration

I spent most of my trip to NYC trying to take artistic and creative photos of the city, in all honesty I’m not sure what lead me to focus on the binoculars with the city in the background like this but for someone that isn’t overly creative I loved the result.

Editing

I process a lot of my raw images in Lightroom, I like to try new ways of enhancing the pictures I create. With this one I tried to create a more older styled film look to the picture, I didn’t want it to lose too much of its natural presence but I wanted more focus to be placed on the binoculars and especially the glisten on them, so I darkened the background and edge a bit by adding two vignettes to the picture, both trying to achieve slightly different effects.

In my camera bag

I have 3 lenses I always make sure I have with me, as I mentioned above I have a Samyang 35mm, I also always carry a Sony Macro FE 90mm and a Tamron 28-75mm Di III RXD. I also always have spare batteries, a GorillaPod, and I’ve recently just added a full length tripod in as well.

Feedback

I guess don’t try too hard and be adventurous, I’m not particularly creative but when you just go with whatever feels right sometimes you can create pictures you’re proud to show off!
