This photo was taken for a project that got delayed by COVID. Then fell under serious problems so Im editing description. Due to unexpected health complications, the delays in forming an artist retreat to build support for creative dreams and even raising funds for the project have been put on hold. Sometimes life throws curve balls at you and you just have to take care of what you can. Hopefully the future will bring better days, but unfortunately this project has had to be postponed and not sure if that will change. Between county code issues, constant shutdowns then not so pleasant news its definitely been an unexpected battle but the dream is still there so you never know. Its in Gods hands now.

Behind The Lens

Location

This shot in particular was actually to be for a gofundme to raise money for a creative venture out of North Carolina that was to be to help local artists pursue creative ventures by offering a learning structure that included mock photoshoots, mock portfolio interviews to group those interested in photography and film in different themed projects and to later utilize their experience to network through local area businesses that could utilize local talents on affordable budgets. The organization was to open the same month COVID shutdowns occurred and sadly the founder was diagnosed with a serious illness months later and has been in a battle to find medical treatment since. They have been trying very hard to overcome these obstacles and hopefully one day the future will bring this concept to fruition, but on a deeper level where support will be offered to include autoimmune compromised creatives. It is very important that these individuals have a way to also promote their talents, as there are many autoimmune compromised individuals who are struggling in staying off the streets once their illnesses have become so complex they are forced onto the disability programs, rendering many unable to afford local rents on a very depleted income that mainly just covers medical expenses that are life long and expensive due to the complexities to treat their issues. This picture was taken just after she had confided that she was treated very poorly by a physician commenting about her looks as she rarely wore makeup during a 40+ ER battle while being denied a surgery for several years that complicated her situation and she wanted people to understand that just because makeup made you look healthy didn't mean you weren't sick and too many people assumed she was okay even though she was battling to get through every day.

Equipment

Back then I used very simple, very cheap equipment, camera was a P900 Nikon. I've really learned that "yes" an upgrade from 16px to 32px in a camera does make a difference but I still like to challenge myself with basic studio setups and experimenting with other lighting effects through post production. I've always liked to stay as simple as possible, but challenge myself to improve on how I take a picture as I still believe the trick in photography is how you utilize lighting in a creative way and the vision of how and where you take your pictures which I'm still working on.

Editing

Yes, they always say the eyes are the windows of the sole so I wanted to draw the most attention to them and I have a habit of trying to accent eyes on my subjects and especially on this particular picture due to the circumstances. I also changed the general coloring of the photo to a more sepia type filter which drew out the the sheen on the lips. I am not one to alter the way someone looks very much, I feel we are who we are and it is in our unique features we can be compelling as human beings.

In my camera bag

Usually I do landscape/nature photography as this is my passion, so I carry very light but in portraits I usually use either a 3/5 popup screen or a 10' setup screen. 2/3 light setup and a reflector, and a step ladder.

Feedback

If you are on a tight budget your editing software can help where you are short on everything else and most have monthly affordable plans now. Don't be afraid to experiment with what you have. Be inventive. Some of the most odd ideas I have sometimes end up being my most interesting photos. It's hit or miss but if you don't experiment you'll never know what works and what does not. Utilize the more experienced photographers advise but find your own path.
