I have been to La Conner on my sailboat as well as on driving trips. Getting into the La Conner channel on a sailboat is tricky because of shifting sandbars at both entrances - easy to run aground if you are not careful! The Skagit valley is a great place for photography, especially when the snow geese are there or the tulips are in bloom.
Pete, I know you live close to La Conner, but if you ever decide to stay the night I highly recommend the Wild Orchid B&B.
