Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the end of a hike as the sun was setting on Smith Rock in Oregon. It is near the town of Terrebonne and Sisters, OR. It was taken in Smith Rock State Park.

Time

After several hours hiking up and around the big prominent rock feature and returning to the trail head as a storm was approaching, I stopped to take this photo. It was about 6:30pm in early September 2019.

Lighting

As the sun was setting, the area was getting dark so I bumped ISO to 200. The natural lighting from the sun setting and the clouds provided the rest.

Equipment

Canon 7D MII, 18-135 kit lens. This was at 18mm, f9 1/160sec. ISO 200 I did not carry my tripod on this hike so it was hand held I believe set on top of a fence post.

Inspiration

I had been taking photos as we hiked as the area is really beautiful with lots of rock formations. The lighting of the meadow and the rocks was just beautiful. I actually printed and framed this for my office at home.

Editing

Just basic edits in Lightroom to brighten dark areas and lighten areas as needed to give dimension.

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon 7D, lens wipes, soft cloth, remote trigger, 18-135mm lens and 24-70mm lens. If I am not hiking too far I bring a tripod but otherwise I always have my tripod and 100-400mm lens in the car. I also have an extender 1.4 for the big lens and a 10-24mm wide angle lens that goes in the car kit. I hike a lot so what comes with me in the backpack depends on the hike and what I want to photograph.

Feedback

I did not plan in advance for this photo but often I will. Obviously, you would need to know when the sun was setting and where if trying to get a similar photo.
