Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a holiday to Venice I planned, for two reasons. The first was to propose to my now wife, the second was to get our thoughts away from her MS diagnosis. This is probably one of my first proper cityscape shoots, it was a challenge to get the lighting right with the harsh early autumn sun in Italy.

Time

I took the picture at 13:40, I was originally just looking for a shaded spot for a little rest. It was our first day exploring Venice, flying from Scotland, the 26-28°C were somewhat different then the 14 - 17°C the day before.

Lighting

I would love to say that I was actively think about lighting. It's hard to describe, I get a feeling about a scene or a moment and then try to get that feeling into my view finder. I try to only press the trigger, when I get that feeling looking through the viewfinder as well.

Equipment

I shot this on my Canon EOS 1300D (also known as Rebel T6 or Kiss X80) and the EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-56 III Kit lens.

Inspiration

The feeling of being in the middle of a busy tourist city was not present here. Behind me there were about 60 people walking, but here it feels like an early morning in northern Europe. Reminding me of breakfasts with my family in Germany as a kid, sitting on our patio on a sunny Sunday morning.

Editing

Due to that I'm a self-taught photographer, and this was only about a year into taking pictures with a DSLR, I lost a lot of the vibrance and colour depth. I ended up helping the structure, the contrast, shadows and the black and white saturation a bit. Only minor adjustments here, but I did need to do some split light development to make the water reflection pop. Adjusting the exposure and contrast differently for the top and bottom part of a gradient mask, with Luminar 4. Originally did the raw development in Luminar 3, then when I got further along in my photography, I revisited the file and created this with Luminar 4.

In my camera bag

After my only camera body, the 1300D, the most important lens for me to have with me in my bag is my Canon Ultrasonic Zoom Lens EF75-300mm 1:4-5.6 USM III, as I love taking wildlife pictures. The next lens is my prime Sigma 50mm 1:2.8 DG Macro, which I've recently started to use for more then just macro photography, by using it in the infinity area of the focal length for landscapes. The third lens I always have with me is the kit lens, then one I took this picture with. Thanks to the 18-55mm gives me the freedom to get close enough to less shy wildlife but also allows me to step back and get a wider view of for example a mountain range. Then I have a light weight aluminium tripod with me, when on hikes and since a few months also a trigger remote, which has help my zoomed pictures in sharp details, because I don't have my hand on the camera.

Feedback

The best advice I have is don't think too much into technical details, let the natural light guide you. Don't be afraid to take that extra moment, to fully capture the feel of the scene and not just the image.
