I'm absolutely in love with them.

Behind The Lens

Location

In a bush right in front of the house I lived in, in Whistler Canada. I noticed the noise from the wings and followed it.

Time

One of the images I'm most proud of. I knew where the hummingbirds would come to feed. After a few days of observing the feeding habits, I went downstairs and sat up my tripod and camera at 10 am and then just waited. This picture must have been taken around 11:30. But I must have taken around 120 pictures of the hummingbirds, before I got this shot.

Lighting

I tried to capture the defuse light from the window behind the bush, the sun was not to high up, as it was early spring. With the slight cloud cover it gave me the opportunity to get a great blurr on the background.

Equipment

Just my trustworthy Canon EOS 1300D my telephoto lens Canon Ultrasonic USM III and my tripod.

Inspiration

I love take pictures of nature and animals. This is also the first country that had hummingbirds living in it, so I was very facinated with them.

Editing

I processed the raw in three layers. One was the blurry background, where I added a bit of a matte finish, so the hummingbird would pop more. Then I added a bit of green correction to the branches, because the sun got the leaves to look a bit unnatural. At last I enhanced the bird a bit, so the feathers would come out a bit more. After doing this I added the two sub layers together as a luminous mask and put the layer with hummingbird on top.

In my camera bag

Normalt I go around with my telephoto lens, Canon Ultrasonic USM III, my Sigma macro lens and the Canon kit lens. I also have my Canon EOS 1300D with me and my tripod. A short time ago I got some adjustable gray filters, who I also got in my bag.

Feedback

Know what you want to shoot. Make sure to study the animal and it's behaviour. Do some test shoots in that environment and bring a lot of patience with you.
