Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at Halong Bay in Vietnam on May 18th 2012 at aprox 20:30, we were standing at the deck of the carabela as the sun was setting and the photo sort of appeared in front of us!

Time

It was aproximately 20:30 in the evening, we were having a drink after that day activities and as the light started to fade some nice colors were forming in the sky, I realized the was a nice frame if I included the rocks and the ships and reached for the camera.

Lighting

Since the light of the sky would make the rocks and the ships underexposed I used a Cokin Z-Pro ND4 filter to take the shot and compensate the light on the sky. It was actually the first use that I made of these filters since I had just bought them! I was quite happy with the results.

Equipment

This shot was taken with a Canon 5D Mark II camera, Canon EF 16-35 II USM Lens 22mm f/3,2 ISO 250

Inspiration

As I said, I was not really looking for that shot, but I had my camera with me and was lucky enough o take the picture when the light was right.

Editing

I used lightroom to add contrast to the picture. Color was also enhanced to make it more vivid.

In my camera bag

I usually carry the 5D body with a Canon zoom lens EF 100-400 1:4,5-5,6 L IS which I really like, a Canon zoon lens EF 16-35 1:2.8 L II USM, and a Carl Zeiss 1:1,4 50mm manual lens that it´s really great.

Feedback

I guess having patience is the best advice I can give, although this is not the case most of the times you will have to wait for the right moment, right clouds on the sky, etc....Dusk and dawn are always the best time of the day for this type of pictures!
