The village of Ebersmunster lies in French Alsace close to the German border. The abbey, was founded in 667 by Saint Deodatus of Nevers on the island of Novientum in the River lll. It was destroyed by the Swedes during the Thirty Years' War, and was not rebuilt until the early 18th century. All that remains is this splendid Baroque abbey church with its 29 metre tall nave, now a World Heritage Site. The abbey itself was dissolved during the French Revolution.
