To replace their tram and trolleybus fleets and some of their ageing buses, London Transport had the AEC company modify their standard AEC Regent chassis in the late 1930's and ordered a massive 4825 of these RT class 56 seat buses - painted red for the central area and green for the country area. They were far more numerous than the ubiquitous Routemaster of the 1960s. Here almost the last of the batch, from 1954, RT 4779 - OLD 566 - stands at Watford awaiting its return to Aylesbury
