Behind The Lens

Location

There is a marshy area in Alabama where the pelicans flock together. I go there sometimes to watch them.

Time

This was taken around midday.

Lighting

I was skeptical that any of these shots would turn out well because of the overcast that day. Little did I realize that some of these would actually turn out nicely.

Equipment

Sony A7iii, Tamron SP 150-600mm lens. (Didn't have my tripod with me. Thankfully I was close enough that I could open the driver's side window to steady my lens.)

Inspiration

When I feel the need to be in quiet and open spaces, I will go out to the river to see what is in the marshes that day. The look on the pelican's faces just made it seem like a good shot.

Editing

I will sometimes use Lightroom. But I lately been using Capture One for my post-processing.

In my camera bag

I carry a small amount of equipment with me. I keep a 24-105mm lens handy most of the time. But when you're doing bird photography, you definitely need a longer zoom lens. In my case, I use the 150-600mm lens.

Feedback

When taking photos of animals, they don't wait on you. You have to wait on them and just stand ready. I have missed many worthy photo opportunities because I was not ready.
