Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on our back porch, one of our favorite places to relax. Tank, our brindle boxer, was not relaxing however. He had just finished doggie boot camp training and was "practicing" a command to "place" (sit where told until released). He's wearing two training collars because he is a very stubborn dog. Thankfully he is smart and recognizes when he's wearing them so that we don't have to enforce it. I love the way he is watching me in this photo. He is so intent on waiting for the release word.

Time

We enjoy sitting on the porch in the late afternoon/early evening. This is the time when the deer and ducks visit the pond. We have a great view of it from here. It is our place of serenity and peace.

Lighting

I was practicing the use of natural lighting. The porch is screened in so there is plenty of it available.

Equipment

I am using a Nikon D850. It was a mother's day gift from my husband and I love it! I was using my 50mm prime lens (I believe). I hope to do more pet photography in the future.

Inspiration

Tank is a readily available model for me. I love animal/wildlife photography and look for any chance to capture their spirit via their eyes. I am captivated by these types of photos and hope to captivate you as well.

Editing

I normally do some minor tweaks in Lightroom to really capture the actual lighting of the moment.

In my camera bag

I usually keep a Godox speedlight available in my camera bag (which is a large contemporary diaper bag btw). I also bought this small soft box that attaches to the speedlight. It has a nice soft effect on portraits. My new favorite lens is the Sigma 105mm macro lens; it has many uses including portraiture.
