Behind The Lens
Location
I set this up in a strawberry patch that is growing in some gravel in my front yard. I live in a beautiful place with lots of photo opportunities, but I wanted to use an unlikely and overlooked space.Time
I love to catch the sunset transition for most of my photos. I remember feeling like a kid, grabbing my toys to run outside to make the most of the light before the day was done.Lighting
I rarely set up any lighting and usually use whatever the sun and clouds give me. The sun hits this area of my yard pretty starkly, so I waited until the sun had arc’d to a better position.Equipment
I used my Nikon D40 that I’ve had for almost 20 years. The lens was a 50mm and I was my own tripod, laying on the ground to get this view.Inspiration
My careers as an artist and child therapist have taught me to see things from different perspectives. I am often sitting with my child clients to speak and play with them on their level and I thought it would be fun to shoot from a lower viewpoint with playful material.Editing
I have no editing skills or training so I use Photoshop Express on my iPhone or Polarr on my Mac. I gave this photo a darker look to enhance the feeling of peering into a small space even though it’s out in the open.In my camera bag
More often than not I use my iPhone 8 out of convenience. I break out the old Nikon D40 when I’m deliberately on a photo adventure.Feedback
The world can be very playful both naturally and by your making. Tap into that kid part of yourself and see what shows up.
