Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Northern California at Point Reyes National Seashore in September of 2019.

Time

It was noonish on a partially cloudy/hazy day ( typical to this area, I am told) so light wasn't particularly great.

Lighting

I wished the day had been a little less overcast as lighting was tricky and a little more challenging than anticipated.

Equipment

This was shot on iPhone XS back camera, no tripod.

Inspiration

I had always wanted to visit this area of Northern California and was there purely by accident. I was driving north from San Francisco and ended up in Petaluma for the night. I was looking at maps and realized how close I was to Point Reyes so next morning, I headed out there to find these amazing trees I had heard so much about. I just definitely go back and really spend some time in the area - it's a must!

Editing

I did post processing with Photoshop. The original image was in color and was turned to B&W as the impact of the image was more powerful. Did some lighting corrections but very little other adjustments.

In my camera bag

My main camera was a Canon t7i which was used to capture this image. I have since upgraded to a Canon EOS R mirrorless camera and I’m loving it. I always carry extra batteries and any other gadgets I may find helpful, such as tripods, lens extenders, red-light flashlights, camera release cables etc. I also use my mobile device quite often and have learned a few tricks that help me with the image taking process so less editing may be required.

Feedback

I was a little rushed through this process so most importantly , check the area you want to photograph ahead of time, if possible. As a matter of fact, visit area a few times to see the effects of light at various times of day if you can - I have learned that in photography you need not only a good eye and decent equipment but also lots of patience - sometimes it's about waiting for the right moment.
