I knew long before I went to Holland that those tulip fields would amaze me. Once I could look at them from above I realized that there were certain structures and colour forms in them. Those were obviously invisible to the human eye on the earth. Some fields gave me the impression of hugh clothing and textile balls and once you look at them you also see an almost surrealistic meaning in them.

Spring in Holland seen from a drone. Tulipfields from above.

Behind The Lens

Location

This is photo was taken with my drone DJI Phantom 4 on a tulip field just outside of Leiden in Holland.

Time

It was in the early morning hours where it's always the best to catch the light and at the same time there isn't much wind and it is very much easier to handle the drone in the air.

Lighting

Well the sun was coming uo and I knew that I would get a great shot flying over the field. The wide angle lense of the drone gave me the chance to cover a big part of the field flying at 150 meters above ground.

Equipment

The DJI Lens is a fixed lens of 28 mm and it can open up to f/2.8 which is never really needed, because I fly mostly in day time conditions.

Inspiration

Once you go to Holland in the flower seasons which is mainly from the end of March to the end of May you will find such beautiful views of the fields and the surroundings that it will almost take your breath away. I went there for the first time 2 years ago and it surprised me so much that I decided to go back again. You find especially in the northern part and on the coastline many different options to take great and outstanding footage.

Editing

Yes I do. I actually only use Lightroom to work with me photos and I only use a few parameters like contrast and colour insensitivity. Thats about it, because photography is sth you do outside with your camera in hand and not the other way around.

In my camera bag

I mostly use as a photographer my Canon 5D Mark II and I also have a Mark III that sometimes gives me the chance to take really good RAW photos and it always gives me the chance to do some video shooting. I have have a tripod with me and a youngnon flashlight for certain shots in the early morning or late afternoon.

Feedback

Well be curious and try different things. You have to be flexible when you are a photographer. i sometimes prefer to sleep in a tent or even in my car, because I can see things much quicker and react up on then much quicker too. You can't really do that if you are in a hotel or in a house waiting for the right time to come. No worries about the technics. Most people learn them by making mistakes and correcting them.
