Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at an AirBNB in Woodstock, New Brunswick, Canada.

Time

This was a great session. She was so easy to work with. This was done during the middle of the afternoon. It was so warm out that day with very little cloud cover. Pretty good for it being the fall when this session took place.

Lighting

I wanted this image to be thoughtful and I used the natural light coming from the window to highlight her features. Natural light is sometimes all you need and that day was certainly one of them. That being said, I didn't have a studio set up or studio lights at this time. Something I'm working on now for my next set of images.

Equipment

During this session I used a Canon EOS 50D (oldy but a goodie) and my standard kit lens. I wanted to use my 50mm but the room was too small and I wasn't able to get full shots with it. I started using a tripod but it just got in the way. Much rather hold on to my camera anyway to get the angles I want. Other than that I kept it simple.

Inspiration

I was looking to do something that showed she was waiting for someone to get home. Whether that was a significant other or herself. The window and the way the room was set up really spoke to me and once I edited the image it was like I was reading a small book about the model and her hopes and dreams.

Editing

I didn't do too much post editing really. Just made sure that the dramatic nature of the black and white was able to tell it's story. Sometimes the simplest edits are the best ones.

In my camera bag

Normally in my bag I have my camera, my kit lens, my nifty fifty, ring flash for my kit lens, multiple different lens filters, cleaning kit for my lens and camera, camera manual, extra batteries, extra SD cards and my handy dandy cheat sheets for my ISO, Shutter speeds and apertures.

Feedback

Take the time to make sure every detail is right. No hair in the face, legs and hands placed in a flattering manner, find the light, no random elastics on their wrist(my biggest pet peeve)and relax. If you're relaxed then so is your subject. If you're not able to use natural light, try playing with your studio lighting to achieve your desired look and feel. Communication is key in these sessions and getting your model to know the difference between a tilt of the head/body and a turn of the head/body is important. If your words don't help, make sure you show them exactly what you're looking for. Don't be afraid to adopt the poses you want your models to do. It helps them understand what you're looking for and helps them relax.
