Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Hereford Cathedral 4 years ago. We were in Hereford to start a four day Paddle Board trip down the River Wye. We took time out to go and find the SAS Memorial and were amazed at the beauty of the Cathedral, i looked up and saw this shot. I only had my phone with me at the time, so it was just one of those moments, not to miss.

Time

Time was around 2pm, if my memory serves me right. Sun was out after a light rain shower.

Lighting

I take a lot of photos of Churches and Cathedrals, because they just create their own atmospheric light, that to me is almost theatrical. I never use any additional lighting, because i want the photo to be natural, to bring across exactly what i am seeing.

Equipment

Apple iPhone, no flash and no filter. Can't remember what the iPhone model number was at the time, but it was the newest, i remember that much.

Inspiration

As i have said, i take a lot of photos of Churches and Cathedrals and their Stained Glass Windows. I find their history and architecture fascinating and very theatrical. When i walk around these incredible buildings, the shot i want just seems to jump out. Inspiration comes easy with such buildings.

Editing

None what so ever. I want the photo to be natural, moody, atmospheric. To be impactful and raise thoughts and conversation.

In my camera bag

Normally, and dependent on what we are doing, i will have my iPhone (i think the cameras are brilliant), my Nikon J1 compact (with two lenses) and my GoPro. I'm not into to big expensive cameras, because i am clumsy and break things and i for one don't think you need them, to get a great shot.

Feedback

Explore these building, they are incredible. Dive into their atmosphere and soak up their history and the shot will appear. We travel all over Europe and the UK and wherever we are we always seek out the local Church or Cathedral. Give it a go, i promise you will not be disappointed.
