Location
I took this photo in my living room. I set her up on the ottoman and used the tan window curtains on the wall behind her as a backdrop. I used blankets that I typically use for newborn sessions to drape over hear body and head.Time
I think it was later in the afternoon so there was little natural light coming in through the windows.Lighting
I was going for a darkened moody type of lighting, Since there was very little natural light available, I set up a 24" beauty dish with a speed light and a diffuser draped over the front of the beauty dish to give a controlled and focused soft light that would mainly hit her face and fall off across the rest of her body.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 5D mk3, a Tamron SP 35mm F1.4, Yongnuo E3-rt remote trigger for the YN600EX-RTii Speedlight held in an S-bracket atop an F-Stopper brand drop stand. MY modifier is a 24" beauty dish with a translucent white fabric diffuserInspiration
I have been looking at a lot of fine art portraiture and I've always gravitated towards darker images in general with my personal art. Being quarantined gave me an opportunity to take time to study this style and try my hand at this technique.Editing
I used Photoshop to adjust the lighting levels, the textures and contrast. I painted on the "make-up" on her face, corrected white balance, created the halo from scratch using the lasso tool and many many layers to add highlights on the hair, clone the hair to make it look longer and paint in other elements. In my camera bag
I always take 2 bodies with me where ever I go (My Canon 5D mk3, and my Canon 6D) my 35, 85, and 14mm lenses, 2-3 speed lights and 2 triggers. Always have secondary back ups for everything if possible. No equipment is perfect and always be prepared for the unexpected.Feedback
Study, study, study, and practice, practice, practice. Ask questions, do research, Don't give up. Always be learning new techniques, there's always something new to learn.
