Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture at Lake Balboa in Van Nuys California. I'm not sure which camera now that I took this one with it was either a Canon SL2 or an Olympus E-Volt E510. I cropped the picture for content. I go to this park quite a bit and take a lot of pictures there. I also fish in this lake. My dog loves to walk here too. The wild life is pretty varied with herons, geese, and many ducks. Usually crowded on weekends I tend to go on weekdays to avoid the crowds.

Time

I go to this park at about midday, sometimes I go near dark but pictures like this one I take in the morning to about noon.

Lighting

I like taking pictures here where I can get the light bouncing off the water to backlight the image. That is what I did here. Doesn't always work but with the white subject, I get pretty even exposure even with the backlit subject.

Equipment

This image was handheld, I'd have to look at the EXIF data to get the exact exposure details. It's either taken with my Canon SL2 with the kit lens 18-55mm or my Olympus E-volt E510 with the kit lens 14-42mm.

Inspiration

I love the way these birds look. I'm always happy to see them on the lake.

Editing

I think the only post-processing I did was crop it to the subject and re-frame it slightly.

In my camera bag

Lately, I've acquired a few more lenses but I usually have the nifty 50mm and the kit lens. I rarely pack more than that and some cleaning supplies. What I'm going to photograph determines what I pack.

Feedback

I nearly always have a camera handy, if not my DSLR then my iPhone. Look for those opportunities and when you see them take the shot. Sometimes the scene will need to be cropped but not always. Overcast days are best for even lighting but the harsh light off the water can be an opportunity all to itself.
