This photo was taken on a late summers afternoon while I was out gardening in my back yard.Time
It was a summer afternoon if I recall correctly. Not usually the best time to be using natural sunlight however it worked in my favour this time round!Lighting
Luckily. this particular bee chose just the right flower in the right sunlight to compliment his beautiful colours. Natural lighting has always been my favourite to work with.Equipment
Surprisingly this was taken on my iPhone with an app that’s allows you to shoot in RAW. Comes in handy when I need to take a quick shot and don’t have time to grab my DSLR.Inspiration
While I was cutting back some bushes in my garden I stumbled across this little guy having a nice ol’ time on his flower. I usually take photos of insects and animals i find in my garden as I find all life no matter how small is so precious. Especially ones that are crucial to our own survival. It was just really lucky that this bee picked a flower that complimented his own colours so perfectly!Editing
I used Adobe Lightroom to edit this photo. With all of my photos I crop them best suited for Instagram, so for this one it was 8.5 x 11 aspect ratio. From memory I brought down the exposure, highlights and shadows but bumped up the contrast and blacks. Gave the overall photo a cooler tone/temp with a slight purple tint however I gave the bee itself a warmer tone with a bit of extra saturation to give it a little extra *pop*.In my camera bag
I always have my phone on hand of course. But I also commonly carry my Canon EOS 200d with its 18-55mm kit lens. I also always carry a disposable Kodak camera for nostalgia reasons as well as sometimes a Polaroid SX-70 OneStepFeedback
Explore your own surroundings. Some people think that to take a good or interesting photo you need to have money to travel. However I consider this one of the best photos I’ve taken and it was right in my own back yard. And I’ve traveled to places like Japan and Singapore! If you’re looking to take photos of small insects/bugs in particular, you need to pay close attention to you surroundings and be fast acting. If I had of ran inside to get my DSLR, I probably would have missed this shot. Use the equipment you have on hand. Whether it be a DSLR, Phone or even a disposable camera. The equipment isn’t what makes a photo great, it’s the skills and creativity the person behind the lens possess that’s the most important thing!
