Behind The Lens

Location

This picture has been taken at the southend of lake Starnberg in the morning at a place with shallow water allowing to wet the feet. This day there was hoar frost on the reed, foggy and only slightly cloudy, just perfect. I often visit this area shortly before work, I am an ambitious amateur photographer living close to this area in Southern Bavaria.

Time

In the early morning shortly after sunrise, since the shot has been taken in February I guess it was about around 7am

Lighting

Luckily the sun only slightly found its way through the fog, thus only slightly emphasizing the hoar frost on the reed, this is a light situation I like most, not too bright light, slightly diffused, coming from one side; moreover I am always attracted to the swinging reed in lkes, often nicely contrasting to the little waves, in this case however, removed by editing

Equipment

Nikon D750, Sigma ART 24-105 mm (all changed now in favor of the Nikon Z7), Gitzo tripod, Lee filter

Inspiration

I was waiting for weeks that hoar frost and light coincided; in my area winters are getting warmer and warmer, so that day was an exemption, luckily also no fishermen were visible, they often disturb the smooth surface of lake Starnberg

Editing

The raw file was processed with Lightroom amd Photoshop, in particular changimg the tones a little bit, and smoothing the water

In my camera bag

Nikon Z7, Nikon 14-24 mm S, Nikon 24-70 mm S, tripod, NISI and Lee filter, Nikon 70-200, Nikon105 mm, cable release

Feedback

Be patient and do not miss the opportunity. Waking early up in the morning helps. Hoar frost in my view is hard to predict, many times I visit this place there was nothing, so to recheck particular places again and again is key, this is more easy, when you drive by on your way to work for example, as in this case
