Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at home, using only the available light coming through the window. I shot this photo by myself. The photo is a composite of two images.

Time

I shot multiple images of myself with various poses. I shot the images between 2pm and 5pm on April 12, 2020. I tried several compositions before choosing the images to composite.

Lighting

A lot of my work involves natural lighting. I just used window light for this image.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D810 with a Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1.8 prime lens on a tripod with a timer. ISO 100 F1.8 1/100 sec. The focus was set to the middle of the chest board to get everything in the image in focus.

Inspiration

What inspired me to take this image was seeing the different quarantine photography challenges. In particularly mangostreetlab.com challenges. They had their photography friends issue challenges to them. This image came about through the clone challenge, were the participants were asked to create an image using the clone tool in photoshop. However No cloning was used in making this image.

Editing

The image is a composite of two images. I first converted both images to black and white, than I combined the images in photoshop. I stacked the two images on top of each other and used photoshop to create a layer mask on one of the images.

In my camera bag

I have a Nikon D810, D7100. 50mm prime, 35mm prime, two telephoto lens, a flash, tripod, extra batteries, flash cards, reflector.

Feedback

Look at other people’s work and try to challenge your self. Keep learning from others. Do things that you would normally not do. Try new things. It took me several tries to get this image and it helped me freshen up on my photoshop skills. Normally I don’t shoot myself but this challenge helped me think outside the box.
