Part of a geothermal study on hydrothermally altered quartz, this was taken using a scanning electron microscope with a cathode luminscencent attachment. The alteration zones are evident by the non-linear patterns. The crystal has been cut parallel to the c-axis (lengthwise) and polished to 1µm finish, the areas of bright white are the epoxy used to attach the crystal to the slide.
