Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a beautiful snow-filled meadow in Wrightwood, California. Photographed, is my beautiful best friend Kayla who is often camera shy. I was making jokes with her about she is in fact camera shy and it was making her laugh and smile, which is how I was able to get this fun shot. I started photography at the ripe age of 10 years old and now fifteen years later it is hard not to find me with a camera in my hand, which is how I creat shots like this.

Time

This image is actually a favorite of mine. Kayla and another friend of ours, Becca wanted to go out and have some fun up in the mountains without disturbing anyone or animals. We found this little meadow in a turnout off the road so I grabbed my camera gear out of the car and captured this shot. By the time this was taken the sun had about an hour before setting and we put down a pashmina wrap, and this was the end result.

Lighting

With the wonderful snow working like a giant white fill card it was easy to meter to receive that even light. Though I felt that the photo was too cold and she is a very warm person so I pulled out a gold fill card from my bag, I never use it because it tends to be harsh. The fill card worked in my favor and gave me this beautiful rich image.

Equipment

For this shot, I used a Canon EOS 1D Mark ii with a 28-135mm Macro lens and a gold fill card.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture her in a real and relaxed moment so we just started chatting and she turned to me and I snapped this. She herself was the inspiration for this beautiful photo.

Editing

There was very little post-processing done to this photo I always shoot with the goal of doing very little editing afterward. I ran the photo through Luminar 4 and Photoshop CS5.

In my camera bag

In my bag, I carry two camera bodies. My first camera is a Canon EOS 1D Mark ii which is the camera that I use for portraits and action shots, with that camera I carry two batteries that are always charged and ready to go. It is important for me to carry a back-up camera also, so I have a Canon EOS 40D which is a favorite of mine I also carry two batteries for the camera and a battery grip if I want to shoot for long hours. I shoot with two different lenses a Tameron 70-200mm 2.8 and a Canon 28-135mm macro. I also carry a speed lite along with collapsable fill cards.

Feedback

Sometimes the best photos you will ever take are the ones very you go out and have an adventure or visiting the places you love, with the people you love. Also being able to see and feel the photo before you take it can make all the difference that means feeling your location, along with your subject. Most of all go out never knowing what may come your way and be ready to capture that shot.
