Mary Goodnight is credited with saving the last remnant of the Southern Plains bison. She convinced her husband, legendary West Texas rancher Charles Goodnight, to preserve the endangered bison. Texas Parks and Wildlife assumed custodianship of the herd in the 1990s. Caprock Canyons State Park became the bisons new home. Members of the state herd were later introduced to San Angelo State Park.
