Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my bedroom with a quarantine-level creatively made backdrop. I used my brother as a model since COVID-19 has postponed my planned shoots.

Time

It frustratingly took me about an hour to set up my messy paper backdrop. It was half falling down in all the shots, and this one was near the end. It was taken around 4 in the afternoon, when the sunlight was sliding below my window.

Lighting

The lighting isn't ideal in my room, so I used a bedroom lamp for better lighting on his face.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 400D, my first 'real' camera that I bought several years ago with my own money. I used a 50mm lens.

Inspiration

I really was inspired by art, and how the face is contoured in drawings. I outlined his face and added some eye detail for a more striking, off-balance look.

Editing

I actually didn't have a black marker, so I had to use a red one. I was editing it and my Mom leaned over my shoulder to say "Is that blood all over his face?" I was already planning on making it black and white, but that definitely convinced me.

In my camera bag

Apart from my camera, lens, cloth etc, I usually have an odd collection of plants, dvds, mirror fragments, and other props. You never know when a creative opportunity will arise, and I always like to make my pictures as creative and unique as possible.

Feedback

As a 16yr old, its hard to get the confidence to share your photos when you're using an old camera, low quality equipment, whatever. But as long as you're having fun, expressing your own story, and learning from each shoot, you can never go wrong.
