Behind The Lens

Location

At my home.

Time

3 pm or so.

Lighting

Sarita's photo was taken in window light in my home. Window light is the best for her, since a flash startles her even with really bad eyesight.

Equipment

Nikon D850, no flash, black velvet 28-300 zoom lens around 62 mm.

Inspiration

Our poodle is blind and was just groomed, so she had lovely yellow ribbons in her hair. I had recently purchased a gold rose to photograph on my guitar and piano to share with my musical friends for birthdays. So, after photographing our poodle, I also photographed the rose in the same light. She is a sweet and stubborn little dog.

Editing

The rose was added to the photo in post processing since she would never stand still for such a photo. I did another earlier photo of her with an American flag in her teeth for a July 4th photo. I had to touch up her eyes as well, since they are hazy.

In my camera bag

I used to borrow my husband's 28-300 zoom lens often to photograph summer concerts as their official photographer. He finally gave me a lens for a gift. Before that, I usually had a 70-300 Nikon telephoto and a Nikon18-135 mm. I usually have a flash, extra battery and an extra SD card.

Feedback

Be patient. Take a lot of photos, but stop if they get to wriggly. Photograph at your dog's eye level and bring lots of treats or squeaky toys to get their attention.
