Late morning around 10ish I thinkLighting
The light was a bit harsh at the time (early summer) and I was about to quit shooting the flamingos as they, to be blunt, smell bad when it gets warm. This one decided to move in front of a shaded area and I decided to stay and see if it would do something interesting since I had a good background for a portrait. The short wait payed off as it did the classic flamingo pose.Equipment
Cannon XTi with a 70-300 telezoom on a manfroto tripod. Natural light with lots of patienceInspiration
I had seen a lot of similar bird photos this year in several photography publications and was hoping to get the chance to try my hand at this style.Editing
I always sharpen in photoshop and in this case, since the light was pretty harsh, I boosted the contrast and nudged the saturation up a bit to give the pink a fighting chance. I also boosted the shadows to remove some minor distractions in the background. In my camera bag
Currently I use a Cannon 5D mkII, the same manfroto tripod, a Cannon 24-105 f4L, a Cannon 70-200 f2.4L and a few other specialty (macro, wide angle etc.) lenses as the need arises.Feedback
Be patient, be VERY patient. Pre-visualize your shot and find the background you want and wait for the subject to move there. The longer your zoom/telephoto the better to create distraction blurring boke and to isolate your subject.
