Location
This photo was taken only about 5 miles from my house in Southern Ontario. We did regular drive-by tours so we could get the right lighting and colouring. My daughter and I both love photography, so being able to share this time together with her dog, was a real treat for me. Whoever said a dog is a man's best friend, has clearly never met my daughter and her dog. They are inseparable.Time
I knew the lighting I wanted was a soft yellowish glow. With an open field to the west, it was just a matter of time. Earlier in the day I checked the forecast and it seemed we may hit the jackpot, and we did. At 5:30pm on May22nd, with the sun getting lower in the sky, and the clouds cutting the bright sunlight down a little bit, the conditions were perfect.Lighting
The sun was still fairly bright, but the clouds were diffusing it just enough to give that soft yellow glow without overpowering the shot. Amy and Finn hurried into the field, Finn jumped into her arms and I fired off a few frames. The shot was exactly what I had hoped for. I did have to be quick however, as Finn is a +/- 60lb Border Collie - Lab cross. All in all, It was a hugely successful day. I got to spend time with Amy, and I got a few great shots of her and her man....er....dog.Equipment
This photo was shot on a Nikon D7100, with the 18-105 Nikor lens. There was no other equipment involvedInspiration
The vast majority of my work is nature, wildlife & landscapes. It's a rare occasion to photograph people. I wanted to try, but had no model. What better subject then, than my daughter?Editing
There was minimal post-processing. Just a little to define the clouds a little, and that's it.In my camera bag
I generally carry a wide range of gear. There are 2 Nikon bodies, a D7100 and a D7200. Lenses include a Nikkor 35mm prime, Sigma 70-200, Tamron 18-400, and a Tamron 150-600....as well as 2 Manfrotto tripods and a Manfrotto monopod.Feedback
The best way to capture something like this is patience and knowledge. Know your subject, surroundings and lighting
