Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken recently in the southern central district of Singapore, a popular spot for both locals and tourists.

Time

The photo was taken during the “blue evening hour” which is typically between 7 to 730pm.

Lighting

The timing of the shot was very much a calculated move. The blue hour helped a lot to cast a gloomy mood feel that I had wanted the photo to be; the result was it resonates the emotions majority are feeling amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Having said, I feel mankind will overcome this crisis and emerge stronger finally.

Equipment

The shot was done with my 7 year old Nikon D800e via a 16-35mm lens.

Inspiration

Luck was with me on a day after a early downpour which left pools of water spreaded on the floor that gave me that unique opportunity to rest my camera just above the water pool and give me a stand-out mirror-like image. Have to admit the set-up was unexpected and I have to dig deep to find whatever coins and keys on my body so to set the cam above the water pool and create the stability needed so as not to wet the lens and other sensitive electronic parts of the cam. The result was exactly I want to create in the image, to give us a perfect reminder to “reflect” and appreciate things we have and not to take them for granted.

Editing

Post processing tactics were applied a give a bit more tonal balance between the sky and the foreground pool of water.

In my camera bag

Moving around in a urban city like Singapore taught me to cary a general zoom range lens , and add with a wide angle lens will be just helpful.

Feedback

Always look for timing and lighting that bring out the image that u crave for. Think outside the box, it can gives you unexpected results.
