Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Fort Smith, Arkansas. I like to capture inspiring images of commonly seen plants/objects. This is a tree that is a short distance from my office.

Time

I saw the tree while driving by and was immediately inspired and wanted to capture it. I only had a fifteen-minute window to take the image because of my current job requires me to stay in the office. I took my camera out to the tree and captured this image roughly 3:00 pm central (Chicago time).

Lighting

A lot of the branches on this tree were in direct harsh sunlight, but this branch was in the shade of a much larger tree.

Equipment

I shot this handheld with my Canon t3i and the Canon 55-250mm lens at 250mm. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I am always in awe when I see this tree and find it very beautiful. I wanted to capture an image to show others what I see when I look at this tree.

Editing

My philosophy in photography is "The less editing, the better". I like to capture the subject in its natural state. The only edits made was a slight bump in contrast.

In my camera bag

I always have my 18-55mm lens with me for general use, but I keep my 55-250mm lens on the camera because i use that lens the most. I also keep my 50mm 1.8 and a manual flash in case someone wants a portrait.

Feedback

Make sure to capture the image either in the beginning or the end of the day. Shooting at noon will put plants in direct, harsh sunlight, creating unusable images due to the extreme contrast and vibrancy. Also take images of plants in the shade to create soft lighting on the subject. Also, shooting with a telephoto lens zoomed in will soften the background and help make it less distracting.
