Behind The Lens

Location

My wife and I decided to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary with a Cruise around the South Pacific Islands. On the third nigh at sea, we went out to watch the sunset from the deck of the ship. I couldn't believe that there was another cruise ship situated perfectly in the sunset. After a number of shots, this is the one that seems to capture the shot at it's best.

Time

Being summer in the South Pacific, this photo was take reasonably late at night. Unlike twilight in the Northern Hemisphere, the sun remains strong until at least 9:30 at night. But descends quite quickly after that to full night. This photo was take around 9:45pm on the 8 January 2015.

Lighting

Thankfully, the sunset was all that was required to make this shot perfect. I didn't even need to tweak it with photoshop. What I saw is what the camera caught!

Equipment

At the time this photo was taken, I was using a Canon 350D. I have since upgraded to a Canon 70D, which I am very happy with. I only use standard lenses - mainly a 18-200mm Canon lens. I have a tripod, but am in-between flashes at the moment.

Inspiration

I think the image speaks for itself. Perfect place, right time!

Editing

No post-processing was required. The picture is exactly as it was captured on RAW.

In my camera bag

As mentioned, I use standard Canon equipment. Canon 70D, 18-200mm Canon Lens and tripod. I have an automatic shutter release for night time shots and a light meter, that only occasionally gets used.

Feedback

My best advice is always to have your camera with you. Often, the amazing shot will be completely out of the blue and you have to be prepared. I remember another sunset that was simply spectacular, but I didn't have my camera with me at the time and so missed it. Devastating!
