While hiking the exhilarating trails of Namafjall Hverir geothermal region in northeastern Iceland, I took this photo looking across the hilltops to see another hiker farther down the path. The steam rising off the volatile sulfuric steam vents produced by magma near the surface of the Earth partially obscured his form among the old volcanic rocks and further helped to create the otherworldly appearance of this dramatic landscape. A volcanic crater lies in the distance and shows just how small we are in comparison to the wonders of nature.
It is important to take care while hiking this region, with steam vents and slippery slopes all around you. The rawness of nature is real.

Location
I took this photo while hiking on a photography trip at Namafjall Hverir volcanic region in northeastern Iceland in SeptemberTime
This was in the mid to late afternoon, as the sun was bringing its rays across the hilltops in vibrant expressions of light, illuminating patches and depriving others who were placed into shadow, cultivating a sense of mystery and wonder across this otherworldly landscape.Lighting
The way the steam from the sulfuric vents rises up and heads towards the light says a lot about us as individuals in our ever-reaching journey towards Light.Equipment
I used my Canon 6D DSLR with a 70-300mm lens which I hung on tightly to with the strap around my neck on this rough, intense terrain.Inspiration
I was stunned by the austere beauty of this seemingly violent landscape, with lava so close underground but beauty springing up all around. The presence of another hiker, so small among the fumes and steam and wild volcanic rocks, inspired me to capture this composition that showed we're all on our journey, surrounded by the stunning powers of our Mother Nature.Editing
I used Lightroom software to process this photograph, effecting the contrast, highlights, shadows and vibrance. I process all of my work with the goal of making the photograph look like the scene did in person, to share the true beauty of nature. In my camera bag
I also work with a 24-70mm lens on my DSLR, a tripod, and a never-ending supply of lens cleaner wipes and microfiber towels.Feedback
Be safe and careful while traversing such intense terrain. Always be sure that your trail is really going somewhere you can safely return from because some trails like this one in Iceland are older and not so well maintained, so they may travel partway down a mountainside only to stop suddenly and require you to climb back up. Volcanic vents can be dangerous. But with the proper care and caution in mind, experiencing stunning beauty like this is a tremendous experience that will stay with you forever. I highly recommend Iceland and other wild places.
