This photo was taken on a walk through the Vancouver VanDusen botanical gardens in the summer of 2019. This particular flower was hidden behind a bush, beside a big tree, caught a glimpse of it, thought it was a great flower to shoot, and may or may not have had to unattractively contort around a tree to get this shot, but I think most of us have been there before! I took about 25 shots of the same flower before I fell over in the dirt and scraped my arm on the tree bark! This was the only shot that turned out, and I admit, it is one of my favorite flower shots I have captured. :)Time
I went on a guided tour of the gardens at 12:30pm. (I always wait until lunch as they are usually less busy, and better for photo taking). I believe it was half way through the tour, maybe 1:00pm. The timing was perfect as if I had taken the earlier tour, or later tour, the sunlight wouldnt have been lighting up this particular flower, in amongst the 7,000+ other plants in the gardens.Lighting
The flower hidden behind a bush and a tree in a small space of light between the bushes. I saw how light didn't penetrate inside the petals, and how it makes it look like the petal stems disappear into blackness. That was without filters or flash, just straight up took the photo.Equipment
Funny, this photo was actually only taken on a cell phone. The phone was a LG-G6, using the auto photo mode, and only used my hand to steady the shot.Inspiration
I love taking photos of flowers, as the vivid colours get grabbed and transported to our screens fairly effectively. Not to mention, they usually sit still for my camera. lol I like to see myself as an amateur travel flower photographer, I LOVE taking shots of exotic flowers.Editing
No post processing whatsoever. If uncropping was a thing, than maybe I couldve added a couple millimeters on the sides instead of missing just a smidge on the one side.In my camera bag
As an extreme amateur photographer, I do not have much in my go bag. Its very basic, a entry level DSLR (Canon rebel), a short 300mm lens, a small tripod with bendy legs for mounting purposes, and a spare battery pack. I also have a small side bag that includes a few random items, such as cleaning materials, a measuring tape, small mirror, and laser pointer for angles and measurements.Feedback
I have always found that taking shots of flowers, its better to take a whole bunch of quick shots instead of doing a full set up, and drawn out photo shot. In the quick shots, you are bound to get a couple decent shots, and one or two really good ones. And the occasional exceptional shot.
