Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Lake Antigua in Panajachel, Guatemala. I've never properly learned photography so everything I do is a lot of trial and error!

Time

I remember waking up incredibly early to watch the sunrise at the lake. I think I woke up around 5am with a few of my friends to walk down to the lake from the hostel we were staying at. The hike was definitely worth it as the views of the volcanoes over the lake were gorgeous. It was funny though because we woke up so early and were looking forward to watching the sun rise but we were looking in the wrong direction so we didn't actually get to see the sun physically rise! The colors were still so beautiful and it was so great to be out in nature and appreciate it without all the tourists and people that are usually out and about in the middle of the day.

Lighting

As this is a landscape, everything was just natural lighting. I took this right after the sun rose so the lighting was really soft and everything about this location just felt magical. I think that the soft and natural lighting really added to the beauty of this lanscape!

Equipment

This was shot on a Sony a6000 with a basic 16-50mm kit lens.

Inspiration

I really wanted some nice photos of the lake and the surrounding nature. I wanted to express the beauty of the nature. I remember hearing the birds chirping and it was slightly windy. There were a whole bunch of stray dogs walking along the pier and other than that, just silence. The beauty of taking pictures early in the morning is the stillness and the tranquility of nobody else being awake but you. I wanted that to be shown through this picture of the lake which was so still other than the occasional ripples from the wind. I also loved how you could see the moon in the sky through the leaves and all the different shades of blue from the water to the sky were so beautiful and I really wanted to capture that.

Editing

Because I am self-taught, I don't know much about how to use photoshop! I did some color correcting on lightroom and added a little clarity and made the image a little sharper but I think thats about all I did!

In my camera bag

Normally, I have my sony a6000, 50mm f1.8 lens, 16-50mm kit lens, and I recently just added a sigma 30mm f1.4 lens to my collection of lenses. I also carry around a few extra batteries and extra SD cards but I like to travel light!

Feedback

I would say just grab a camera and be spontaneous! Sometimes, you don't have to think too hard about the framing and the angles! I feel like while I do put a lot of thought into my images, it isn't always my main focus! I like to take pictures to capture the moment that I was in and I want the image to convey the thoughts I had when taking that image and I think that really helps to get that awesome shot!
