Location
This photo was taken at a local sports bar (Sammy's). The group playing that night was the Juke Joint Preachers, as this is a picture of the bass player for that evening.Time
Inside at night.Lighting
Sammy's needs better lights. On this night, the only lights I could get to work at all were primary blue. The pics in color were studies in blue but not that interesting otherwise. When I converted them to black and white, however, I discovered that blue light makes for fantastic black and white pictures.Equipment
My camera is a Nikon D850. My everyday lens (used for this shot) is Nikkor AF-S 28-300mm1:3.5-5.6 G. No flash, handheld.Inspiration
Before the pandemic, I liked going to Sammy's for open mic nights, and when l learned that one of my favorite local bands was going to be playing, I made sure I was there. I enjoy taking photos of musicians while they are performing. If they are good, it will show through the picture.Editing
As there was only blue light available for the stage, my post processing consisted of converting the image to black and white. In my camera bag
I listed my camera and everyday lens above. An extra battery, SD card, strap, and flash are in the bag everyday. If I need more, I get my bigger bag.Feedback
Stage lighting in bars usually sucks. Even when the lighting is ok, the musicians don't want any light in their eyes. It helps if you have lighting design/operation skills (I got mine as an undergraduate drama major). The biggest tip from this shot: even when the lighting is lousy, take your shots. Bad lighting in the real world can become beauty in the processing arena.
