We can plan and focus all we want. Sometimes this yields the best results. Sometimes we need to stop and take it all in. Exist in the moment and enjoy life as it happens around us. This image was happening behind my composition, luckily i turned around.

Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken in Morgan's Bay South Africa.

Time

I got up at 04:00 for a beautiful summer sunrise on the last day of a trip through the Transkei.

Lighting

Nature did all the work. I was just lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.

Equipment

Shot on my trust Canon 70D. This was handheld to avoid messing up the bracketing of the shot behind me.

Inspiration

I was actually set up to capture a famous coastal sea-stack in the opposite direction to this image, but i looked back at some point and noticed this glorious scene unfolding behind me.

Editing

Most landscape photography needs to be pushed to emulate the capabilities of the human eye, but the RAW file required just a little tonal stretching and it was ready to be displayed.

In my camera bag

I try to travel as light as possible. You can find a Canon 70D, a Sigma 10- 20mm, a Canon 55-250mm kit lens and a Canon 50mm macro lens. There are also some filters and cleaning gear. An extra battery or two, a torch and multi-tool. As much as i hate it, my rusty old tripod goes everywhere with me as well...

Feedback

Sometimes you need to stop what you are doing and take everything in. Sometimes your plans and intentions are flawed and you can only come to this conclusion once you observe these plans and intentions more objectively. Tunnel vision can stop you from experiencing or shooting things that surprise you.
