Having recently finished reading Philip Pullman’s “His Dark Materials” series, a visit to Raufarhöfn, one of Iceland’s most northerly villages, seemed apt, especially given that it’s aurora borealis season. This gateway makes up one of four such archways orientated to face the compass points at Heimskautsgerðið, or Arctic Henge. This shot was taken looking northeast during a spectacular display of the northern lights; the unusual purple hue is caused by solar particles reacting with nitrogen lower in the atmosphere than is usually seen.
