Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at the Kruger National Park, South Africa, at one of the waterholes for the animals.

Time

We were driving at about 07:30 to the waterhole to see the animals that came to the waterhole. There were lots of hippos at the waterhole. Several birds came in and sit on the hippos back. Around 08:05 I saw this bird on the hippo's back. The hippo was swimming very slowly. It was just at that moment I was thinking of a surfer on his surfing board at the sea. The way the bird was standing on the hippo's back, made me call him the bird that surfs. I took the photo on Tuesday, 24 September 2019 at 08:07.

Lighting

I was very lucky that morning. The lighting was perfect. I did not need to use any extra equipment to improve the lighting.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D5200 camera and a 600 mm Sigma lens. There was no other equipment used.

Inspiration

Shooting photos is a hobby I love, mainly of animals and nature. A friend of mine told me the moment you see something that is different and attracts your attention, then you take a photo of it. The picture you see is your best shot.

Editing

I did not do lots of post-processing. I only gave it a bit more color and crop the image. It was my lucky day.

In my camera bag

I have my Nikon D5200 camera, very important a fully charged battery and a spare battery in my bag. You never know when you will need the second battery. Further on I have two extra memory cards, a Nikon 18 - 55 mm lens, a Nikon 55 - 200 mm lens and a Sigma 150 - 600 mm lens, a cleaning kit, a small table tripod, and a user's manual. I have my big tripod as well.

Feedback

Whenever you see something that caught your eye that can be a wonderful image, don't hesitate to take a photo and don't just take one or two photos. With digital cameras, you can take lots of photos and afterwards review each photo and found the perfect picture. Mainly with animals, you will find that there are many surprises in some photos you never saw when you took the photo. Whenever you take photos, don't just think of taking the best photo. Enjoy every moment of it.
