Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a lane way in Perth, Western Australia while we were on holidays.

Time

I shot this image at 11:38pm on 18 July 2018 on our way back to our hotel after exploring the streets of Perth after dinner.

Lighting

As it was almost midnight, I only used the ambient street light available and did not use a flash.

Equipment

This was shot on my Canon 5d mkiii, Canon 24-70mm at f/2.8 1/80s ISO 6400. I did not use a tripod or flash. I find it less conspicuous to hand hold rather than carrying a tripod and flash when capturing street life.

Inspiration

I found this image fascinating as it is actually painted on the roller door of a laneway coffee shop. I thought it was both beautiful and inspiring with details most street art do not usual possess. There are so many stories included in this work of art it is hard not to keep exploring it.

Editing

I developed this in Lightroom mainly to correct the colour of the artificial light distorting the actual colour of the painting. I also slightly cropped the image to correct the framing.

In my camera bag

In my bag I have: 2 Bodies - Canon 5d mkiii, Canon 5d mkiv, 4 Canon Lenses - 24-70mm f2.8, 70-200mm mkii f2.8, 50mm f1.2, 16-35mm f2.8

Feedback

Stepping as far back from the wall as possible as to include as much of the image into frame was imperative. Pumping up the iso was also critical in capturing this image. A wide angle may have assisted with filling the frame but I find that my 24-70mm works best for street photography as it is versatile to cover most situations without dragging around my whole kit.
