Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken from Tunnel View in Yosemite National Park. On this day they were doing controlled burnings on the Yosemite valley floor in various locations, creating a thick layer of smoke over the valley. As the evening progressed, the smoke grew thicker and thicker, and by the time the sun had set, the valley floor was completely hidden by the dense smoke.

Time

This was in the evening right before sunset.

Lighting

The valley is always beautiful during the golden hour before the sun sets. Although, this is usually when it is also the most busy.

Equipment

Nikon D810, Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8, Zomei Tripod.

Inspiration

I have taken photos of this location on several occasions but this was the first time I had seen the valley full of smoke, so I knew I had to capture this event.

Editing

I did some basic adjustments to the contrast and luminance. I also slightly modified highlights, shadows, blacks, and whites in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon D810 and sometimes my Nikon D3 as a back-up. I normally have my Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8, Tokina 24-70 f/2.8, and my Tamron 35mm 1.8 VC. I always carry extra SD/CF cards, lens cleaner, L-Bracket tripod mount, and chapstick. That's a must.

Feedback

I would recommend getting there several hours before sunset during the busy season and just post up shop. Get your tripod set in place before all the other photographers, who will definitely show up, get their place and there's no more room left on the walkway.
