The Norman keep of Richmond's castle towering abouve the rooftops of the neighbouring buildings. The castle is in the centre of the town of Richmond in North Yorkshire and dominates its surroundings. Constructed by Alan Rufus, a Norman, in 1071, the castle was intended as a defence against insurrection in the North. This 100 foot high keep was added in the C12th by Duke Conan of Brittany. The castle was apparently derelict by 1540 but was repaired in the 1800s due to the rise in tourism.
