Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken off the coast of Japan, one early morning as we approached Nagasaki.

Time

It was about 7am and the light was just beginning to open up the skies. I grabbed my camera and began taking shots as it was such a powerful scene that was presenting itself.

Lighting

Lighting was perfectly natural, the beauty of sunrise/sunset shots is something we all see and a few appreciate. The landscape of the distant hills and crevices in shadow enabled the chance of getting the perfect shot.

Equipment

At the time I used a Nikon P900 bridge camera, it enables an extreme zoom capability, perfect for getting up close and personal with scenes like this. I rested the camera on the deck rail of the ship to avoid too much movement and as we were only sailing at a few knots it was all stable enough.

Inspiration

Anything inspires me, scenes can open up anywhere at anytime, its having the skill and ability to recognise an opportunity. When I saw this one it had to be taken, sun rise in the land of the rising sun, its what the Japanese flag depicts, perfectly.

Editing

Not a lot, there is so much naturalness that altering the white balance was out of the question. I use Adobe Photoshop initially and then the Luminar Flex plugin that allows so much more control with its numerous filters. The risk with this type of shot I think is trying over process what in essence is a perfect scene.

In my camera bag

I've since replaced my Nikon P900 with the later model, the P1000. It has a greater zoom capability, a wider aperture and the manual focus is a lot easier to use. The other advantage is the RAW setting, so it makes the camera much more flexible, great for this type of shot and even better for taking wildlife shots with its massive 125x zoom. Of course, the need for a tripod is much greater too.

Feedback

Always be ready to capture something special because opportunities don't announce themselves, they just happen right in front of you and its knowing the difference between what is and isn't the right scene.
